Karoliina's jewellery journey started in 2016 as a result of working in Yangon for over three years and falling in love with the beautiful natural gemstones found there. Hence, the name Design of Gems. She's originally from Finland, but had adopted the sunny Singapore as her home long time ago.
Karoliina's passion is handcrafted quality and one-of-a-kind pieces that are as unique as you are. She prefers jewellery to be made from natural materials and last for years to come, but still be affordable. She does not support synthetic material or mass production, and likes to work with local craftsmen and artisans: gemstone cutters and silversmiths to spread the economic benefits for a wider population. Her ethos is environmental sustainability by re-using precious materials and treating the complete supply chain ethically by providing good jobs for the talented craftsmen and women.
The first collections - MyDesign and Pansodan - were crafted in Myanmar to provide the community good job opportunities and outlook for the future. Further pieces will not made due to the current situation in the country.
Now Karoliina handcrafts her own silver rings, bracelets, necklaces and occasional earrings with a pop of color from natural gemstones at her home workshop in Singapore. The one-of-a-kind pieces are exclusively available at Creative Jewellery Studio, not-for-profit jewellery boutique in Singapore.
Karoliina holds two jewellery diplomas in Fine Jewellery Design and Metal Arts (new metal and traditional metalsmithing) from Jewellery Design and Management School in Singapore.
